Smithsonian Tiger Conservation Partnership to launch Regional Smart Patrol Training courses early in the new year

Under the Global Tiger Initiative’s support programs for capacity building, the Smithsonian Tiger Conservation Partnership has announced two new Regional Smart Patrol training courses to begin just after the New Year.

November 28, 2011, Washington, DC– If the fate of tigers in the wild were dependent solely on the dedication and passion of the conservationists present at the World Bank on Monday for the First Anniversary of the St. Petersburg Tiger Summit, this iconic species would today likely be thriving in the forests across 13 tiger range countries in Asia.

One Year after the Tiger Summit

One year ago in St. Petersburg, 13 tiger range countries endorsed a comprehensive strategy to stop the wild tiger’s decline toward extinction and to begin to recover tiger populations and habitat with a goal of reaching ‘Tx2,’ or the doubling of wild tiger populations, by the Year of the Tiger, 2022.

November Event Calendar

November 2011 marks the 1st Anniversary of St. Petersburg Tiger Summit. GTI and its partners organize interesting events around the Anniversary to move tiger conservation effort further forward. It will be a busy month of implementation workshops and events.

Tiger Conservation on Center Stage in Vietnam

Hanoi, Vietnam, was a hot spot of activity around the Global Tiger Recovery Program (GTRP) recently. On August 2-4, the Global Tiger Initiative and the Global Tiger Forum (GTF) jointly with the Government of Vietnam hosted an expert workshop on scientific monitoring of tigers and GTRP implementation monitoring there. All 13 Tiger Range Countries (TRCs) were represented. This workshop addressed critical commitments of the St. Petersburg Declaration on Tiger Conservation.

Tiger conservation has become a popular topic of conversation in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. On July 29, the Biodiversity Conservation Agency and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Government of Vietnam will host a celebration of International Tiger Day.

A vast and growing illegal trade in wildlife, estimated at US$5-10 billion a year, threatens to drive many species—from tigers to turtles—to extinction. Unfortunately, “there are no easy solutions to the problem; and almost every particular regulatory policy is either difficult to implement or entails difficult trade-offs and dilemmas.”

Planning and Building Infrastructure that is Smart and Green: A Report from Bhutan

On May 31, His Excellency, Lyonpo Dr. Pema Gyamtsho, the Honorable Minister of Agriculture and Forests of Bhutan, endorsed the Thimphu Recommendations as a “good start to walk the talk and the path we must follow to conserve tigers, and with them, all the species in the food chain and their ecosystems.”
